FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  1. "I was told by Virginia Power that I need a heavy-up before they upgrade my service drop. What is a heavy-up?
A heavy-up is when you upgrade your main power panel from a lower power rating to a higher power rating for example: 60AMPS to 200AMPS. Many older homes that are now using modern appliances have need for a heavy-up. Galaxy Electric specializes in many electrical systems that include heavy-ups.

  2. "I have called an electric company to run an underground power line to my shed. The electric contractor told me that he does not have to do anything else except do the job. Is this true?
If you are located in the Washington D.C metro area, it is the law to call "Miss Utilities" prior to starting the work. In most cases contractors are to handle this. Additionally, there may be requirements to pull a permit in the county you live in prior to doing work. Be aware of companies that claim otherwise.

  3. Who is supposed to pull the permit for work done in my home?
The home owner can always pull a permit without the need for any electric license or credentials prior to work starting. In this case the home owner is responsible for the work being done and all responsibility that comes with the permit. However, all electrical contractors must have a Master Electrician License to pull a permit prior to starting work. The Master Electrician does not have to do the said work but is responsible for the work being done.

  4. What happens after the permit is pulled and the work is completed by an electrical contractor?
Once the work has been completed, the contractor or homeowner calls the county to come out and inspect the work done. Once the county inspector passes the work, the job is complete.

  5. All my bathrooms outlets and outside outles are not working?
In most houses the outlets in the bathroom, garage, and outside are all wired together

  6. Do you work on ceiling fans?
